British Broadens Methanol Toxicity Warning Roster with Eleven Countries
The UK authorities has included an additional eleven more countries to its public advisory register about the dangers of industrial alcohol contamination from tainted spirits.
The updated travel guidance covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after reports of "a global increase in the frequency of reported cases" of methanol poisoning.
Just a few weeks ago, the government had already added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current roster, following multiple high-profile incidents like the deadly death of six travelers in Laos in 2024.
Tourists are being advised that even tiny quantities of toxic alcohol can cause blindness or loss of life within 12–48 hrs.
What is Industrial Alcohol and In what way is it Used?
Toxic alcohol is a harmful substance commonly employed in coolant, car cleaning liquid, and paint thinner. This substance is not meant for human consumption.
Although it is naturally produced during the production of alcoholic drinks, reputable manufacturers reduce it to minimal, harmless amounts for ingestion through the distillation process.
But in various destinations, it is illegally mixed into alcoholic drinks to cut costs, and because it is tasteless and odourless, it is extremely challenging to notice.
Official Recommendations for Travelers
Authorities minister a senior official said that all travellers should know the symptoms of industrial alcohol toxicity.
"While having drinks abroad, choose reputable establishments and refrain from homemade alcohol or complimentary drinks," Falconer said.
"In case something seems unusual, like a hangover that's way worse than typical or blurred eyesight – contact a doctor fast."
The complete list of nations noted as presenting a danger of methanol contamination presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
