Synthetic graphics claiming to show Nicolás Maduro under arrest following his apprehension by the United States have amassed tens of millions of impressions on social media.

The Way Fake Pictures of Maduro Emerged Soon After

The first fabricated synthetic picture apparently displaying him being escorted off a plane emerged shortly after. The picture was unpublished by any verified government accounts; rather, it was posted on the platform X by an profile describing itself as an “AI video art enthusiast”.

We’ve checked the SynthID tool, confirming the picture was created or altered with Google AI.

More AI-generated pictures started circulating in the following period, seemingly depicting additional perspectives of Maduro under guard. Discernible identifying marks on these pictures show they were posted by an Instagram account called ultravfx.

SynthID confirms all of these images were likewise generated or edited AI technology.

Authentic Image Released but Fakes Continued

The former US president released the genuine photograph of Maduro in handcuffs aboard the USS Iwo Jima on that morning. But even after this real photo was released, AI-generated pictures kept circulating but were modified to incorporate the grey athletic wear seen on Maduro.

Digital forensics indicate the new fake images were initially shared on the video platform by a digital art account. Once again, analysis says the new graphics were created or altered AI tools.
